Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco spearheaded the official turnover and inauguration ceremonies of the inaugural Tourist Rest Area (TRA) in Medellin, Cebu on Monday, July 10.
The TRA, a prominent endeavor of the DOT prioritized under the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. to enhance the overall tourist experience, Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), DOT’s infrastructure arm, has undertaken the project. It serves as a central hub where both foreign and local travelers can seek information regarding tourism sites, attractions, activities, and accommodations. Additionally, it functions as a platform for reporting safety and security concerns while providing access to various essential amenities during visitors’ stays, including clean restroom facilities.
Moreover, the TRA facility is equipped with charging stations and houses a pasalubong center, which aims to stimulate the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Having completed the project, it is now turned over to the Local Government of Medellin, Cebu Province for its operation and maintenance pursuant to the executed Memorandum of Agreement and in accordance with the Guidelines set by the DOT.
Among the areas where the DOT has commenced the development of TRAs are Manolo Fortich in Bukidnon, Samal Island in Davao del Norte, and the towns of Carcar, Carmen, and Moalboal in Cebu, as well as Dauis in Bohol, Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte, Roxas in Palawan, and Baguio City.
During the turnover ceremony, Secretary Frasco was joined by Deputy House Speaker Duke Frasco, Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia, Medellin Mayor Joven Mondigo, Jr., Vice Mayor Alfonso Lim, and several other local officials. Notable attendees included DOT Undersecretary Shahlimar Hofer Tamano and Gregory Oller, Assistant Chief Operating Officer (ACOO) of the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA).
